Welcome

Peekskill Museum is a community supported cultural organization. Begun in 1946 with the acquisition of the former Herrick family home of 1878, this house-museum has been offering various exhibits and programs since 1976.

Our primary focus is local history. People, events and objects of past times in Peekskill and Cortlandt are highlighted at Peekskill Museum in several ways.

Exhibits

Baseball Exhibit

We have a great display of old photographs, uniforms, equipment, signed balls, programs, from Peekskill Military teams, to 20th century Twilight League company/organization teams to Professional Minor League teams at the turn of the 20th century to the Peekskill Highlanders from 1946-49.

Peekskill’s Iron Age

We have more than 20 examples of cast iron stoves made in Peekskill over the years. There were over 30 different manufactures with as many as 7 operating at any one time over the more than 100 years when the industry was the primary source of our economy. The photo shown is a picture of a cast iron toy called “Little Eva”. It is an exact, functional, example of a full sized stove made by Southard-Robertson. In essence, it is the forerunner of the “Easy Bake Oven”.

Peekskill History Summary

Peekskill was established as a distinct locale by travelers from the Hudson River in the 1600s. The English sea captain and explorer, Henry Hudson sailed up and down the river in the autumn of 1609 onboard the Dutch ship Half Moon…

Revolutionary War Jacket

This jacket was worn by a local young man who chose to be a Tory in support of the British. The British forces welcomed the Torys since they knew the area and the population but they seldom integrated them into their actual, highly trained, fighting forces. The Torys were often used as messengers, cooks, maintenance men, etc. The jacket we have was actually a British Band jacket. They probably gave it to the local man to make him feel like he was one of them. Actually it identified him as a follower of the British and local residents loyal to Gen. Washington were capturing and hanging Torys. He left the jacket behind and borrowed some civilian clothes to escape.
